Adam born 15-07-1817 in 's Gravenhage, more information about Adam Sneijder you can find on the site of Wil Schackmann, he has written a book "De Proefkolonie" this is about the people in FrederiksoordOn his death certificate it says that Hendrik was born on 15-04-1761 but in the place Ohmes on 16 april 1764 one Heinrich Schneider is baptized as son of Adam Schneider en Christine Blumenauer. Hendrik has a son named Adam and a daughter named Christine, so I think that Hendrik Sneijder is Heinrich Schneijder who is baptized in 1764
Hendrik religion is R.K, the oldest two children are baptized in the R.K. church.
Hendrik Sneijder sailed in januari 1804 as sailor on 's Lands Brik off war the Diana under commande of Lt. Hidde Bok.
On 08-03-1821 Hendrik en Maria with their three youngest children are registered in de colony Frederiksoord, this was one of the colonies of the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid.De Maatschappij van Weldadigheid was founded in 1818 opgericht on initiative of general Johannes van den Bosch, supported by King Willem I. After the French domination, there was a lot of poverty and impoverishment. Than Johannes van den Bosch had the plan to give shelter and lead to familys that were hit by bad circumstances, and give them the chance to a better existing.
Living in FrederiksoordWhen the colonist family arrived there was a house available for them.
The first houses for the colonist had a living with a fireplace and two windows and an outdoor. On the attic there were two small bedrooms. The inventory was for six persons , one maried couple with four children, there was one extra chair and some extra tableware. There were also a mirrow and two tablecloths to promote the propriety of the family.
There was a wooden barn attached to the house and outside was the toilet.
They also had the use of 3ha ground, waarvan ruim 10 are could be used for there one purposes. The colonist also had a small orchard near the house. The rest was ment to use for the grown of rye, potatoes, buckwheat and flax.
The size should be enough to make a living for a family with five children but in practice the surface was to smal and the profit were poor. So they spend most time to improve the grounds.
As soon as the arrived they were given clothes that they had to wear and keep in good condition. Sometimes the clothes and inventory were neglected or sold.If a colonist could not work on the land they could learn a profession for example carpenter, shoemaker, printer or mat plaiter. Women and girls could spin at home or in the spinningroom. They also had to take care of the household and make sure that the family waswel taking care of. The take care of the vegetable garden and helpt with lifting and planting the potatoes. They get payed for al there labour and when al the costs for living were depreciated and there was some money left they get paid out if not they were in debt.
When a colonist worked hard and lived by the rules he could become a free farmer. Against a small lease had the use of a farm with land and they could keep the harvest. They were not completely independentiff they misbehave or did not work hard enough the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid could always install them as colonists again.
Untill 1860 the Maatschappij had there own currency. With this they could buy things in the colony store, everything accept alcohol. Because there was some misbehave with alcohol in the past the use of it was forbidden in the colony. For children from 6-12 year there was obliged education. After tha they had to go to eveningschool to learn a profession because at the age of eighteen they had to leave the colony.
